Fonts_____________________________________

The fonts used in your web site are another important part of the style. The choices are vast and very diverse, so have a little fun with this part. If you will be using this new font in print or on signs you may want to keep this in mind at this time and carefully consider how it will appear in two foot letters on the side of your building.

Body Text
When it comes to the text in web pages there is no absolute control. The web page designer chooses between a San-serif, serif or mono font group, each containing two or three similar fonts. Variations in type size and any bold, italic or underline style settings are also chosen by the designer. It is best to stick to the fonts most viewers have in their system. The three most common examples are below.

San-serif:
Arial, Helvetica, Verdana

serif:
Times, New Times Roman, Georgia,

mono:
Courier, New Courier

The viewers browser uses a matching font in the computer system to display the text in the browser window with any style settings applied. Because of slight variation in fonts, borrower and browser settings, web pages may not appear the same on every computer.

Headline
The fonts you choose for your headings should not compete with your logo, graphics or images, but should accent the style or mood of your site. Since these fonts may not be available on every viewers system, they must be placed into your web site as graphic elements, so they will not be replaced by the viewers browser. To the right are a few samples of the diversity of fonts available. You are by no means limited to these few choices. If you have a particular font in mind, just let me know.

It is also a good idea to limit the number of fonts you use. Too many fonts will clutter up your site and get in the way of defining the style. Try to stick to one body or text font and one headline font that compliment each other and do not compete for attention. Of course you can still use regular, bold and italics to make the important parts of your messages stand out.
